But I would not consider it a real universal language currently, and being based on a VM makes it not suited well for embedded design and kernel development. You made an interesting point: OOP design, considered fundamental 20 years ago, is now only one paradigm of many for modern language developers. While functional programming becomes more important. I have done much OOP programming myself, for GUI related stuff I still prefer it, but I am beginning to learn its disadvantages.
