Perhaps starting with the PCB side is a miss step. A lot of the gEDA folks
have long wanted to overhaul their PCB stuff anyway for architectural
reasons. At best moving footprints between KiCAD and gEDA's companion PCB
would make more sense.
Alternatively working on schematic interchange could work. The gEDA
schematic capture and etc are very well thought out and mature.
