It is easy to kill those drivers when you hotplug the motor or with
unrelyable connections).
This is true for prebuild drivers as well.

Don't directly connect 12V to your motor.
You need to limit the current, because at 4 ohm you would get 3A, which
I assume is to high for your motor.
The high voltage is only to charge the motor coils more quickly, which
is important to get a high torque at higher speeds.
