There are differnet showstoppers for different people. These are hobby projects, people have limited time to spend on them and they tend to chose the ones that comforts them the best. Although it's pretty irrelevant, but as you asked, for me typical showstoppers are: - if i'd need to use proprietary software for any part of the project - distributed version control system (git, hg and alike) - considerable amount of the code is written in OOP Fortunately there are many projects out there and many developers out there too, so it's easy to find a suitable pairing so that everyone works on something they like.
