Pressing 'F' (uppercase) did nothing, whereas pressing 'f' (lowercase)
brought back the view I had originally - display area totally black,
as if I had no gerbers or empty gerbers loaded.

Oh yes, it goes into that state upon initial loading indeed - it just
isn't a very useful state.
