Indeed I am looking for a nice behavior of my Ruby tool too. My first idea was to simple insert diagonal lines, and then let the user grep arbitrary points on the diagonal line and move it to convert the diagonal into one horizontal and one vertical line. Your suggestion may be better, I will try to remember it.
