This is a good point, maintainability is also valuable.

I find it important to *be able to* make choices when one wants to,
and I find it equally important not to *have to* make choices when
the choices are obvious.

"Obvious", "common sense", "contemporary" and "modern" are perceived
completely differently by different individuals and I think it's
important to be able to "see" what the common case is, and optimize
for that while obviously still supporting the corner cases.
