Perhaps the key is the 'a' suffix - lower case letters on the ends of refdes's are treated differently between the various tools, so you should avoid them. Slotted components should have the *same* refdes. Assigning a footprint to each slot is OK as long as they're the same. If they're different, it's undefined which one "wins".
