Hi Rob,
How many of the wires from the switch connect directly into the motor? If
more than 2, there may be multiple taps on the motor winding to accomplish
the speed control. If this is the case, you could either rig up transistors
to try to switch power and ground to the various windings, or simply use
two of leads from the motor and vary the speed using the pwm methods
already suggested.
