If the grid size has been changed repeatedly, the components can be off
the grid.
You can turn on Cursor Snaps to Pins and Pads so that you can pick up
the parts centrally, and/or, you can use realign grid (once you've
clicked on this, click a pin of a part and the grid will be aligned to
that point).
The combination of these will allow you to place groups of components on
different grid spacings where you like. Each time you want to work on a
particular area with a particular grid size, remember to change the grid
setting accordingly and to realign the grid onto one of the parts before
doing anything else in that area.
This is great when working around various metric/imperial parts.
