gEDA is GPL EDA.
If you want, you can use any proprietary tool but the goal of the
gEDA project is to build a GPL'ed EDA toolset.
gEDA project has been started on Linux and I like Linux and don't
want to buy any other OS in order to lay out PCBs.
pcb is probably (one of) the best tool(s) from all the GPL'ed
tools which we have now and which can be used on Linux.

After all that, could your propose another GPL'ed pcb layout
alternative for the gEDA project which can work at least on Linux
systems?

As for your preferences, please describe your or your friends'
workflow wrt pcb layout in the gEDA wiki and all users would be
aware of and thankful to you for that. (I believe, it should
spend much less time on this than writing posts for this
discussion :)
