We don't.

If you check PCB's "getting started guide", you'll find we use...

footprint = a pattern of copper/silk

element = one instance of a footprint with specific attributes
(position, rotation, refdes, etc).

We used to use "component" to mean "the side of the board with the
parts on it" but we now use "top" to refer to that side of the board.
