One of my students also experienced the pcb crashes-on-DRC problem. This
was on native linux(debian/wheezy). There was no gnome involved, either.
These days, we prefer xfce. However, on my personal dexktop, DRC worked
just fine for the very same pcb files. Setup of the computers is very
similar except for the differences induced by hardware. Notably, the
students boxes have nvidia graphic cards while mine has an ATI casrd
installed.

If your main OS is MS-windows, you might consider the windows build of pcb.
