The only time I've seen this happen is when I try and turn on
compositing in metacity. PCB gets really weird though if I try and use
the new gnome desktop, but I'm finding a lot of other things are
unstable with the new desktop under virtualbox. I go back and check
everything with each new release of virtualbox :P

I came to the same conclusion for using pcb in a linux guest virtualbox.
