Apparently, there is some heuristic magic going on here. The io-symbols I 
use all the time have neither value=INPUT nor value=IO. They have no value 
at all. E.g.
  http://www.gedasymbols.org/user/kai_martin_knaak/symbols/titleblock/in.sym

Also, I seem to have no problem in using net=-5V:1 
  http://www.gedasymbols.org/user/kai_martin_knaak/symbols/power/5V-.sym

Are these issues addressed anywhere in the documentation?
