Subject: [geda-user] gEDA and Upgrading to Ubuntu 12.04
Reply-To: geda-user AT delorie DOT com

A lot has been written on this board recently about the behavior of the
gEDA version that comes with Ubuntu 12.04. I am still running Ubuntu
11.10 and I am thinking of upgrading to 12.10, which will update gEDA as
well. I have a couple of questions because some of my projects in my
professional life depend on gEDA:

(1) How stable is the version of gEDA in the repos of Ubuntu 12.04,
32-bit and 64-bit? In this board I've read several reports of PCB
crashes and bugs (besides the ps-exporting bug).

(2) Will the newer gEDA (esp.PCB) in the repos of Ubuntu 12.04
correctly interpret the files of previous versions? In particular, if
the older PCB files refer to dimensions in inches/mils by default, will
those dimensions be interpreted correctly by the newer PCB?

(3) On April 25, Colin Bennett reported that the multiple attribute
editor of gschem is unusable because it has a 'value' text field of
zero. Can this be fixed by setting the LIBOVERLAY_SCROLLBAR environment
variable to 0 prior to starting gschmem, as explained by Peter Clifton
on Dec. 12? (That posting referred to an earlier version of gEDA.)

(4) Does the newest gEDA in the repos of Ubuntu 12.04 handle UTF-8,
perhaps after setting some LC environment variable?

Thank you in advance for your time.
