I might like to have a rough outline of the board shape (for
interestingly-shaped boards) with the mechanical features from the
schematic placed on it.  For instance, showing where the
mounting holes are.

Anyway, it's up to the user to decide how to use it.  If gschem had
general support for vector graphics elements (i.e. curves, the most
general drawing element), then the user can do anything.

Perhaps.  But I don't think it can be compared to Adobe
Illustrator -- I have no direct experience using Illustrator, but I
think it is quite a bit more powerful than Inkscape.

Linux -- Ubuntu 11.10.  But after measuring it, I stand corrected.
Inkscape starts “cold” (not recently run) in 6 seconds.  That's
still way too long. It feels like minutes.  The main problem is
that it still takes about 5 seconds even when it's “hot”.

In constrast, the GIMP takes 5 seconds to start cold,
but only 2 seconds hot.

LibreCAD starts in 1 second.

Konqueror starts cold in 2 seconds, hot in less than one second.

So, a hot start of 5 seconds is like eternity.

I'm sure your designs are much bigger than mine, but in my
experience gschem zooming and panning is smooth as butter.
In pcb I have seen small slowdowns only when I zoom out so that the
grid dots are about 2 pixels apart -- they seem to slow it down a
lot.  But I'm using the nVIDIA control panel to enable
antialiasing... it makes the silk screen text in particular look
MUCH nicer in pcb.
