Hello all,

I used to be a "relatively advanced" user of gEDA and PCB until about
mid 2016. We had developed a sizeable library of symbols and
footprints (largely for power electronics) which I am working to clean
up and publish now.

I have been totally away from gEDA-PCB since 2016 until now.

I am now trying to set up gEDA-PCB on my computer and for my students
(upper undergraduate and graduate) and I have many questions about the
massive changes that seem to have happened in the meantime, as below.

1. gEDA-gaf:

I recall compiling from source since the Ubuntu packages used to be
far out of date. Today gEDA is no longer in the Ubuntu repo, but I see
LeptonEDA (1.9.10 from March 2020).
Is Lepton the preferred mode of getting gEDA-gaf for Ubuntu newbies?

The Lepton README states that it is backwards compatible with
gEDA-gaf, but are there more subtleties that may affect the end user
(perhaps a slightly advanced user)?
gEDA-gaf 1.10.2 also seems to have been released recently (Dec 2020)

2. PCB:
The ubuntu repo contains old versions of both pcb and pcb-rnd.
Is pcb-rnd suitable for a first-time user (of PCB) to get started
with, or would pcb be more appropriate?

Thanks in advance!

Abhijit
