That auto-layer-side-switch should work in pcb-rnd too. I've just tested 
it with the default layer stackup, and couldn't see anyting wrong. 
Compared the bahavour with pcb-4.0.0 and they seem to match.

It might be that you have some corner case board or usage pattern that 
triggers a bug.

Could you please send me an example .pcb where it breaks, and describe the 
exacty steps you took (e.g. clicks) from the program startup? If I could 
reproduce the problem here, I am sure it'd be easy to fix the bug.
