The extension should be ".fp" only.

You can either copy it next to the footprints that came with the
default PCB install, or copy them in a separate location and tell PCB
where to look.

If you are on Ubuntu:
--The default location is /usr/share/pcb/newlib (create a new folder
here and copy your footprint into it.) You need to copy as super-user
(either using "sudo cp" or "sudo nautilus" from the terminal)
--The custom location can be anywhere (Mine is in a folder called
Footprints in my home directory). Then tell PCB to find it by setting
this location in PCB preferences>Library
