Ah, I finally figured it out. The problem was with the preferences in =
XQuartz on the Mac. Duh.
This seems to work:
Input:
Emulate 3-button mouse
Enable key equivalents
others unchecked
Pasteboard:
Enable syncing
Update Clipboard
Update Primary
Update Pasteboard
other unchecked
