Ah, I see now.

Copy in the pop-menu is a twin for Edit->Copy Mode (keystroke EC)
and it works just so after left-click. It works a bit differently
compared with just hitting EC in which case you just move the
mouse pointer to copy something, you have to left-click first to
start copying because otherwise the program doesn't know which
coord to use for the copy mode anchor.  It doesn't copy things
into clipboard. There is another entry in the main menu:
Edit->Copy; and it is not present in the pop-up menu.
