If you don't want to see the status/log window at all, just put in your
~/.gEDA/gschemrc the line
  (log-window "later") 
and remove or comment in using ';' (without quotes) the line
  (log-window "startup") 
if it is present there.

Then you will be able to open the log window later from menu.
