Actually, I don't think gschem copes properly with _printing_ generic
unicode symbols. On-screen should work just fine, but IIRC, the printing
code has not yet been updated to use cairo rendering.
I vaguely recall that certain symbols (possibly including omega) did
previously print to post-script correctly, but going forward - I think
we were hoping to use Cairo for printing, which should make things "just
work" for any unicode glyphs.
I also vaguely recall having a branch somewhere which hacked in cairo
printing for this kind of occasion, but I can't remember what its state
is now.
I'll wait for the 1.8.0 release to stabilise for a little while, then
will look and see if it is worth building a windows version against that
with my old cairo printing patches applied.
