(Without watching the video yet), I think I know what the problem is
here.. it is an issue with the widget sizes being demanded in the
presence of Ubuntu's overlay scrollbar feature.

To workaround it, you can start gschem with:

LIBOVERLAY_SCROLLBAR=3D0 gschem

Or if you wanted to patch the code with a quick bandaid:
