All these strings should be in UTF8, so that is not likely to be the
problem.

As a goto response to crashes, I tend to run under valgrind and see if
that flags anything obvious.

valgrind pcb

This will run PCB very very slowly, but it might produce something
useful to help us debug things.

The difference on Ubuntu could be down to build options, compiler
version, compiler flags etc., depending on what 'kind' of crash this is.

The fastest way to proceed  would be as DJ has suggested, to share the
board and .cmd files with one of the developers - e.g. me or DJ, and see
if we can reproduce the problem. Once reproduced, a fix might be
available within minutes ;)
