Since the old version does not fail, the problem must be introduced
possibly between 2.03 and 2.04, or possibly between 2.04 and 2.05.

2.04 added symlink and open-dir-as-fd funnies. 2.05 made changes
to how lfn functions are used. It would be interesting to test builds
made against original v2.04 from 2003: if that doesn't have the issue,
than the problem is introduced between 2.04 and 2.05 possibly by the
lfn changes by Juan.
