This is a port of GNU diffutils version 3.3 to MSDOS/DJGPP.
Diffutils are a collection of programs for finding differences
between files:
* diff -- displays differences between 2 files line by line;
* diff3 -- displays differences between 3 files (usually, 2 files
and their common ancestor);
* sdiff -- displays differences between 2 files side by side, and
allows to merge between them interactively;
* cmp -- displays differences between 2 binary files byte by byte.
The documentation of the package includes, in addition to the four
programs mentioned above, also the manual for the Patch utility.
This release fixes an issue concerning the assertions used in
diffutils code.
For a reason still unclear to me, when the code is compiled the
NDEBUG macro
is never set so all assertions are enabled. The DJGPP 2.04 port version
supports symlinks. If the option --no-dereference is used then the
symlinks
are compared as ordinary files. If the option is omitted, the files
referenced
by the links will be compared instead. If the links are brocken, and the
assertions are not disabled by defining NDEBUG, the diff program
aborts with
SIGABRT issuing the usual stack trace. This behaviour may be usefull
during
code development but not when using the program. With the assertion
disabled
an error message is printed and normal operation continues. The
DJGPP 2.03
version of the port does not support symlinks so this is not an issue
there.
If for some reason you want to reenable the assertions, remove the NDEBUG
definition in /djgpp/config_h.sed and configure and compile the
sources again.
DJGPP specific changes.
=======================
- There are no DJGPP specific user visible changes compared with the last
port.
- The most notable change of the FSF distribution is that the DJGPP
support
has been dropped in favour of cygwin and MinGW support.
- This port will detect at run time if it is running on an OS with
LFN support
or not and choose the appropriate temp file name pattern accordingly.
E.g.: "sdiffXXXXXX" if LFN support is available, else "dfXXXXXX"
will be
used.
- This port will honor also the DOS specific environment variable
TEMP and
TMP if TMPDIR is not set. If neither is accessible then P_tmpdir will
define the location to store temp files. If this directory also
does not
exist then the current working directory will be used.
- All other changes are those required to get gnulib sources compiled
with
djgpp and are not user visible.
- To be able to build this port you will need to have LFN support.
As usual, all djgpp specific files (config.bat, diffs, README files,
etc.)
are located in the /djgpp directory.
The source package is now distributed configured for both DJGPP 2.03 and
DJGPP 2.04. In the top srcdir there is a "_build.203" directory and a
"_build.204" directory.

Here is an extract of the NEWS file showing the user visible changes from
the last port (GNU diffutils 3.2) to this one:

** New features
--new-file (-N) and --unidirectional-new-file now allow comparisons
to "-".
A standard input that's closed acts like a nonexistent file.
A file name containing spaces, double quotes, backslashes or control
characters is now encoded in a diff header as a double-quoted C string
literal. The escape sequences \\, \", \a, \b, \f, \n, \r, \t, \v and
\ooo (a three-digit octal number between 0 and 255) are used.
** Packaging
diffutils is now designed to build with Cygwin or MinGW rather than
DJGPP.
The ms subdirectory has been removed.

The port has been compiled using stock djdev203 (patchlevel 2) and
consists
of the usual three packages that can be downloaded from
