I did finally get it to compile and run; the linking issue was not
memory-related, but caused by a malformed file containing the list
of .o files that went into the binary.  Once I solved that, everything
was good.

In my case, I was indeed compiling a custom version: NetHack for DOS
with the nethack-curses interface.  http://nethack-curses.sourceforge.net
