This part is OT in this NG. Anyway, your "instincts" are quite right: in 
plain DOS the mouse needs a driver to be installed at boot time and the 
usual way of doing it was to have it called via AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS.

You've to go after the driver that works with your mouse and then 
install it accordingly.

In the past, mice used to come with a disk with the appropriate driver, 
if your mouse is a recent one you'll need to search for a 'compatible' 
driver.
