Is there a missing delay or do you need to wait for an acknowledgement of
some sort?  This is what is sounds like to me from my experiences with other
software.  Perhaps a very old or slow PC?  Like pre 486DX4-133...

It should be easy for you to disable them or  to create a simple test
program without them to test this.
