It is actually:

  Start bit, Data Bits, [optional parity bit], stop bit.

The final stop bit may be set to 1, 1.5 or two bit times.
The parity may be set to odd, even, zero, or one (or none).
Data bits length may be set to 5, 6, 7, or 8.
Data bits are emitted least significant bit first.

The quiescent state of the line is the equivalent of a one bit.  I
can't remember whether that is called marking or spacing.
