It would also means equally many (if not more) actual hard disk
accesses.  Those are pretty much guaranteed to be orders of magnitude
slower than any copying of data between realmode and protected mode.

Trying to eliminate memory copying in a DOS program that's going to be
waiting for the disks to spin almost all the time would be a rather
pointless exercise.
