That suggests something was serious broken with your compiler
installation.  It almost certainly has nothing to do with the issue at
hand.

Logical only if the number you printed was zero.  That case was
reportedly working for the OP even before he corrected the problem
(probably by coincidence rather than by design, but we shouldn't be
overly picky...).
