That's too long; I never saw such huge delays.  What files are in that
directory, mostly? are there lots of large subdirectories or files
with unusual file-name extensions?  Can you post what "ls -F" produces
for that directory?

Does "ls --color=auto" display faster?  If so, you could use that to
get the same information from the color of the file names.
