It does make sense, since ls.exe should work exactly the same as it
does on Unix.  That is, it should be able to show if a file is
executable or not, and latest (beta) version of DJGPP supports
symlinks as well.

That's not what ls.exe is for; see my other message in this thread.

ls.exe already optimizes its calls to `stat' according to the switches
it is given.  Any more optimizations will hurt compatibility with
Posix platforms, which is bad.
