Not sure how to find and fix the Dos Subsystem problem?

here is another attempt for running ls.exe in XP to generate the
problem. This problem happens some time.
After running ls.exe, it will pop up a crash window with
"16 bit MS-DOS subsystem" in the title,
the error message is : "The NTVDM CPU has encounted an illegal
instruction. CS:00cf IP: 0b2a OP:ff ff ff 00 00 Choose 'close' to
terminate the applicaiont. There are two buttons "Close" and "Ignore"
for this pop up window.
