The best OS for this task is IMHO OS2 v4. It may be considered a dead
OS, but it suits the task of DJGPP/RHIDE coding very well. It's crash
proof and very fast indeed. Note that you might have big trouble
finding drivers if you've got a fairly new computer.

I coded some programs a few years ago in this environment using
RHIDE/DJGPP+Allegro(for music+svga). The only problem is that none of
these programs run under WinXP/w2k. 

Not sure about WinME as I haven't been using it.
