You got a compress.exe in  your DJGPP package?  That raises a 
suspicion: you aren't by any chance still running a DJGPP V1
toolchain, are you?

Given the platform now named as W2K, that obviously can't be the case.
I'm not sure I would still be able to tell the difference between the
go32.exe traceback and that of CWSDPMI.

How long ago?  What's the timestamp on your f2c.exe and compress.exe
files, e.g.?

This points the most likely blame at one of MS's security updates
released in that timeframe having made it impossible to run DPMI
apps the way they used to.

Anyway: you're in for a massive update of your DJGPP toolchain (or a
downgrade of your OS).
