Does that mean that even the programs you downloaded, such as the
compiler and other utilities, crash with the exact same message?

This message comes from CWSDPMI, the DPMI server used only on plain
DOS and other systems that don't already have a DPMI server built into
them.  Can you please describe your machine--what OS and version you
have installed, what files you downloaded from the DJGPP site, etc.?
