Ok, that means it was using a built-in rule before.

Note that you must start command lines with a hard tab, not eight
spaces.

Er, that shouldn't be a problem.  Spaces *after* it are a problem, but
not before.

Are your sources in the current directory?  I.e. the same directory as
the Makefile?  If not, you need a VPATH directive (read the make docs
about this).
