What's so unreadable about it?  

You may have better luck with DOS-based tools, though.  If nothing else
works, try

	more < readme.1st

in a console.

And that's exactly your problem.  Unless I misremember badly, 1.49b
won't work on XP.  Google this newsgroup for earlier references to
later editions of RHIDE. They're at 1.5-something by now.  You may yet
have to pass special options for even those editions of RHIDE to work
on XP.

XP is a rather hostile platform for DOS programs.
