For embedded systems there are a lot of tiny but very powerful
libraries.
Not only FTP but almost all network protocols and layers are
implemented.
Of course, if you want to use a library you may need to write the I/O
functions used for reading and writing the bytes from the net, but it
may be interesting to give a look.
