I agree, but it was worth trying what Hans-Bernhard suggested; now we
know for sure.

Anyway, the problem seems to be that a line that is supposed to
delete *.o files fails, right?  Does it help to use the -k switch
when you invoke Make?  Does it help to prepend a `-' character to the
offending line in the Makefile?

If neithyer of these helps, please post the complete transcript of
the two Make runs, one each for every suggestion above.
