In Windows XP support for any kind of direct, and sometimes even for
_indirect_, hardware access by DOS programs is somewhere between
miserable and non-existant.

In particular, you can mostly forget about any VBE support whatsoever.
The only thing you can get to work somewhat reliably are the original
VGA/MCGA modes from 13 years ago, i.e. 640x480 AT 16 and 320x200 AT 256

In other words: for this kind of program, you better stay away from XP.
