I would double check the executable arrived OK.  It could also be an 
issue with uninitialized memory having different values (you could try the
crt0 flag to zero memory to eliminate this possibility).

it's just the ftp service on clio.rice.edu; there is no ftp.clio.rice.edu
FTP doesn't work for some sites - I suspect the university's firewall is 
blocking them for some reason, or some client compatibility issue.
