Have a look at freedos (www.freedos.org) as MS don't support DOS
anymore and it's official as of 31-Dec-2002.

DJGPP apps that I use work okay without any extended memory manager.

The other good thig about freedos in an embedded systems area is that
you can get the source code and I think all of the tool's to re-build
it free of charge (TC 1.0 is avilable as a free download from Borland
and it's even older than the one you use!!!).
