I've done exactly the same as you, switching to GFX_TEXT first.
It sometimes helps, but I find it's hit and miss.
Switching modes is not really kosher Allegro.
I would recommend making it optional in any program.

There's a new mode selector in the latest 3.9.38 WIP, I'm going to
have a look at that ASAP
