Put this way, the question would is unanswerable for lack of details.
But fortunately, you did include them, disguised as an "example":

Because that's just plain wrong.  Welcome to protected mode, which is
called so because it protects you (or more precisely: the sanity of
your computer system) from such dangerous operations.

You definitely should consult the DJGPP FAQ to learn about the
differences between DJGPP and the more traditional 16bit DOS compilers
like Turbo C.
