:I suggested `ls' because you reported that you have the Fileutils package

:Ah, SBLive! strikes again... There's a known issue with version 1.x of
:SBLive!. Try commenting out the above line from AUTOEXEC.BAT and see if
:that makes the problem go away. If it does, try upgrading SBLive! from
:the vendor's site, then install the new drivers and reboot.
Yes!!! You got it! I am so pleased :))). It was the "SB 16 Emulation"
that was a problem.
Now I'll get down to the task of trying to learn some C++. I'll also go
take a look at the FAQ to figure out how I managed to install fil40b.zip
incorrectly.
(And FWIW, if it helps anyone else, here are the steps to stop SB 16
Emulation from loading...)
(1) Right click on My Computer, choose Properties > Device Manager. Click
on the plus sign next to Creative Miscellaneous Devices, highlight
Creative SB 16 emulation and click the Properties button. Under the
General tab, check "Disable in all hardware profiles" and uncheck the box
next to "Exists in all hardware profiles."
(2) Edit the CTSYN.INI line that says "SBEnable=true" to read "false."
(3) Edit the AUTOEXEC.BAT file to remove the line
C:\Progra~1\Creative\Sblive\dosdrv\SBEINIT.com.
(4) Restart.
